Alexis Saelemaekers' World Cup campaign came to an end last night as Belgium were eliminated by Spain in the quarterfinals. The Milan winger was only given a few minutes to play, coming on in the 86th minute. He had a brief chance to make an impact but was unable to do so.

The match was a closely contested affair, with Fabian Ruiz scoring for Spain in the 30th minute, only for Charles De Ketelaere to equalize for Belgium just before halftime. However, Mikel Merino scored the decisive goal for Spain in the 88th minute, securing their place in the semifinals.

Saelemaekers will now go on vacation before returning to his club in about three weeks. He will then report for duty under coach Amorim. The Milan player will look to make a strong impression when he returns.

The defeat brings an end to Saelemaekers' World Cup adventure, but he will be focused on his club career in the coming weeks.
