The history of football is dotted with great hopes and pure talents crushed by huge expectations. Among the most emblematic parables is that of Alen Halilovic, the Croatian attacking midfielder who in his early years earned the weighty label "Croatian Messi" and natural heir to Luka Modric. A heavy label that became an unsustainable burden for a boy who on 10 June 2013, at only 16 years, 11 months and 23 days, became the youngest debutant in the history of the Croatian national team. Today, at 30 years old, that radiant future has turned into a bitter present: Halilovic is currently a free agent without a club.\n\nHalilovic’s rise started at a dizzying pace with Dinamo Zagreb, where he became the second youngest debutant in the Champions League, convincing Barcelona to invest €5 million in 2014 to secure his left‑footed talent. However, in Catalonia the boy found space almost only in the B team, collecting a single first‑team appearance before loans to Sporting Gijon, Hamburg and Las Palmas.\n\nIn the summer of 2018 the big Serie A call arrived: Milan signed him on a free transfer with a three‑year contract. It was then coach Rino Gattuso who wanted him, but at Milanello the understanding and feeling never clicked. Halilovic did not collect a single minute in the league, only three appearances in the UEFA Europa League for a total of 60 minutes played. The Calabrian coach preferred physical, structured midfielders willing to sacrifice, tactical flaws that earned the Croat harsh public criticism. Loaned first to Standard Liège and then to Heerenveen, the player commented on his departure from the Rossoneri before the termination in 2020: "You have to ask Mr Gattuso why I did not play. He told me I was still young and had to improve. I did not want to wait."\n\nAfter brief spells with Birmingham, Reading and Rijeka, Halilovic’s career seemed to find a second youth in the Netherlands with Fortuna Sittard. Between 2023 and 2025 the Croat stood out as one of Europe’s best dribblers, again showing his huge crystal class. However, in the last season too many physical problems limited him to only 5 appearances and 30 minutes, leading the Dutch club to decide not to renew his contract which expired on 30 June 2026. At 30, the “Croatian Messi” star now seeks one last opportunity to avoid fading completely.
