The words spoken today by Ruben Amorim at the press conference do not represent a sudden request nor an attempt to protect himself after the first three official matches on the Milan bench. The Portuguese coach had in fact addressed the issue of time even before being chosen by the red-and-black club.

According to Fabrizio Romano, during the talks with Gerry Cardinale Amorim was immediately enthusiastic about the possibility of coaching Milan. At the same time, however, he spoke very frankly to the owner, explaining that building a team coherent with his ideas would require patience.

Cardinale therefore knows by heart the thought expressed by the coach on the eve of the match against Lazio. When Amorim says he needs time to convey his identity, he is not changing his version: he is reaffirming the principle on which the agreement with the ownership was born.

A position that the RedBird number one would have understood and shared from the start. Amorim had not promised immediate results or a transformation completed in a few weeks. He expressed the willingness to accept with enthusiasm, but asked for the necessary conditions to develop an authentic technical project.

The clarity shown in the talks also contributed to Milan's final choice. Amorim indeed managed to surpass the competition of Matthias Jaissle, then in charge of Al Ahli and today coach of Newcastle.

The background takes on particular weight at the moment the Portuguese's work begins to be judged after only three games. The ownership knew that the new cycle would require a building period and chose Amorim accepting his method and timings. The coach will naturally have to prove on the field that he deserves this trust, but Cardinale cannot be surprised by his words: they had already been spoken before the signing.
