Daniele Bonera believes that his former side AC Milan are behind their rivals when it comes to the Scudetto race, as things stand.

The bookmakers wouldn’t have Milan among the favourites to go on and win the title. Inter are champions and have continuity under Chivu, while Massimiliano Allegri will be looking for redemption with Napoli. Como have ambition under Fabregas, and Juventus are beginning to spend too.

There feels like a lot of work to be done on the squad at Milan too, with as many as 12 sales being touted and three signings still required in order to complete the squad. Otherwise, it will be an uphill battle from round one against Torino a week on Sunday.

Bonera was one of several ex-Milan figures interviewed by La Gazzetta dello Sport about the Scudetto hopes that the Rossoneri have going into their first season under Ruben Amorim.

“In my opinion, Milan are currently a step behind the other teams in the Scudetto race and can’t win the league because they lack planning. In three years, they’ve had four coaches and I don’t know how many players… Each coach has brought different systems and ideas.

“Until there’s a solid managerial and technical project from the ground up, it will be difficult to compete for the title. In football, anything can happen, but right now, I think Milan are still far from the top.

“Of course, as a former Milan player, I hope I’m wrong and that the team is further strengthened in the final three weeks of the transfer window. There are certainly some squad issues now that were there last year as well.”
