Costacurta analyzed the prospects of Ruben Amorim's team for La Gazzetta dello Sport between league and cups

In an interview given to the columns of La Gazzetta dello Sport, former historic red and black defender Alessandro Costacurta expressed his view on the real ambitions of Milan under Ruben Amorim. According to the former centre‑back, the Milan side still does not have the necessary requirements to aim for the top of the league table, although it has the proper credentials to secure a place in the top European competition and to play a leading role on the international stage.

The gap in Serie A and the assessment of rivals

When asked about the Italian side's chances, Costacurta outlined a clear hierarchy in the Italian championship, placing Inter and Roma one step above the competition:

« Is Milan a title contender? No, they are not as strong as Inter. Fighting for the Champions League certainly yes. Inter impressed me: if you can score three goals against a team that sits back like Napoli it means you are very strong. Roma is also ahead of Milan. Today, together with Como, those teams are spectacular. Milan and Juventus have not yet reached that level »

Europa League and the pitfalls of international clubs

Costacurta’s view on the European path is quite different. Regarding the prospects in the second continental club competition, the former defender indeed sees Milan and Juventus at the starting line as forecast favorites, while warning about the dangers hidden in matches against foreign sides:

« Milan favorite? I would say I do not see anyone better than them and Juventus, but there is not such a big gap between the Spanish and English teams. Often, if they are not called Real or Barcelona, we dismiss them and that should not be done. They are all trap games, also because you will always have to play the best anyway »
