The waiting period is ending. Ruben Loftus-Cheek continues to deliver intangible performances, far below what a player with his physical and technical qualities should guarantee. The contract expiring at the end of the season makes the situation even clearer: without a decisive change in pace, the chances of renewal with Milan now seem reduced to a minimum.
The main problem does not concern only a single negative performance. Concerning is the feeling that the English midfielder can no longer find a precise role in the Rossoneri project. Loftus-Cheek has physical structure, progression ability and quality in his runs, but too often he goes through matches without leaving a concrete trace. When he fails to attack the area or break the lines while carrying the ball, his contribution becomes easily marginal.
From a player with his experience it would be reasonable to expect much more. Milan would need a midfielder capable of taking responsibility, especially when the team struggles to find rhythm and offensive solutions. Instead, Loftus-Cheek often appears disconnected from the play, inconsistent in pressing and unable to exploit the physical superiority that should be his main advantage.
Loftus-Cheek must win back Amorim
Ruben Amorim’s arrival inevitably opened a new phase. Every player has been called to prove they are functional to the Portuguese coach’s system, but for Loftus-Cheek this test carries even greater weight. The contract deadline does not allow postponing assessments and Milan must quickly understand whether it makes sense to continue investing in him.
The English midfielder must show he can interpret multiple roles without losing effectiveness. He can operate in the middle of the field, accompany the action or be used in a more advanced position, but versatility only has value when accompanied by performance. Being usable in several zones is not enough if he does not become decisive in any of them.
Amorim demands intensity, participation and willingness to sacrifice. Loftus-Cheek must therefore raise his level in every aspect, starting with consistency. He does not need occasional flashes, but a series of convincing performances that can change a currently very complicated contract situation.
Milan cannot afford renewals out of gratitude
The club must think in a cold manner. A renewal cannot be granted based on potential talent or past displays. It must represent a choice consistent with the technical project and current performance. From this point of view, Loftus-Cheek is not offering sufficient reasons to merit a confirmation.
His future, however, still remains in his own hands. The season gives him time to overturn the hierarchy and convince Amorim, but the margin for error has drastically reduced. Personality, presence and high‑level performances are needed. In the absence of a clear turn, Milan would have few reasons to extend the relationship.
An end‑of‑season departure would then become the most logical conclusion. Loftus-Cheek must react immediately: not only to obtain a new contract, but to avoid his Rossoneri experience ending as a record of missed opportunities.
