Marco Silva previewed Benfica’s visit to face AC Milan this week after they won at the weekend, admitting some regrets.

This week, Milan will return to the Europa League for the first time since Stefano Pioli’s time at the club. It’s an unwanted situation. However, it could actually be a chance for the Rossoneri to test several young players in a less pressured environment.

It also offers the chance for a new trophy to be won. There is a long way to go, though, before we can even think about the Diavolo lifting the Europa League trophy this season.

Silva previews Milan-Benfica

Speaking to the media after his team’s win against Gil Vincente this weekend, Silva looked at the challenge facing his team at San Siro in midweek, as MilanPress relayed.

"It was a tough match, and it became even tougher when we went behind, but it was a more than deserved victory. It was a tough one, and hard-earned. We won’t always start games with a lead, but I’m very satisfied, especially with the confidence shown by the players and the support of the fans."

"I should have made more substitutions, because I sensed the team was feeling heavy. It was very hot, and the pressure of starting to lose brings with it even more fatigue. We were the ones who wanted to bring on more players, but I only made one substitution. I chose to replace only one player who’s playing a lot, Enzo."

"There was a bit of fatigue, but those who came off the bench responded well. Palhinha came on fresh and gave the team momentum; Aursnes brought more clarity, Barreiro added more depth, Echeverri had a great impact, and so did Durán."

"It was crucial to win, because we were about to face a nine-point week, and we managed to do it in different ways. We got two wins on difficult pitches, on difficult turf. But, honestly, Sunday is what matters."

"Before then, we have a Europa League match, and I’m already thinking about how to get the players back to normal. Then we’ll have time to talk about the derby."

It’s clear that the game isn’t Silva’s biggest priority and hopefully that could be an aid for Milan. However, European games are never that simple.
