Wing-backs have always been a key part of Ruben Amorim’s system and philosophy, but there has been little mention of movement. La Gazzetta dello Sport write that in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1, the wing-backs are a source of both attacking power and balance. To put it more simply: they are a crucial part of his tactical set-up. The problem is that at Milan, he found himself lacking in this respect.

In other words, the current composition of the squad doesn’t guarantee him the type of wide players he usually relies on, and time is running out to address it.

Needs and auditions

Let’s start on the right. When last season ended, everyone automatically assumed Alexis Saelemaekers would keep his place as he’s a player with the right characteristics for Amorim. The Belgian is a two-way player with good technical ability, so he ticks boxes.

However, Samuel Chukwueze’s return to the fold began to take shape, but as a wing-back not as a playmaker. Chukwueze wouldn’t have had much opportunity in Allegri’s 3-5-2, but with the new system he could genuinely become a starter on the right.

The trial is still underway, because to pass it, you need to demonstrate to the coach that you can also diligently tackle the defensive phase. Otherwise, with Amorim’s aggressive style of play, chasms will open up.

Chukwueze has been mixed so far in this regard, alternating threatening attacking performances like the one against Celtic with defensive lapses like the one that led to Inter’s goal. The big question is simple: can he give guarantees in the possession and non-possession phase all year?

This is a crucial question because, if he can’t, Amorim will have to look to the transfer market. Speaking of which, the coach clearly isn’t a fan of Zachary Athekame, who is heading out on loan to Lyon.

Amorim had clearly stated that he would like to deploy Saelemaekers on the left, as an inverted wing-back. This is only possible in two scenarios: if Chukwueze convinces the manager by the end of August (otherwise, he’ll compete for an attacking midfield place), or if another signing comes. Yunus Musah, who has the physicality to play on the wing, remains an option there.

On the left, Pervis Estupinan is on the market, while Davide Bartesaghi lacks the pace and characteristics for the style of play Amorim is looking for. Given that it’s around mid-August, the Rossoneri’s flanks are a work in progress, but that could be a worry.
